FOLLOWING initial works on Grays' one way system at the end of 2019, engineering works to help improve the transport network in Grays are set to recommence in the town centre on Thursday, 16 January.
Works will facilitate the reintroduction of a two-way system on Orsett Road as part of a wider transport strategy to help make Grays safer and more accessible, promoting job creation and access to skills and learning.
Plans follow feedback from residents and businesses which identified the need to replace the existing one-way system.
The Orsett Road two-way system is planned to be installed by spring 2020, shortly followed by real-time, responsive traffic lights at the junctions of:
Derby Road and Clarence Road
Stanley Road and Clarence RoadStanley Road and Orsett Road
Orsett Road and Derby Road Temporary pedestrian and traffic management will be in place throughout the duration of the works to safeguard the public and road workers. Existing traffic signals will be replaced by temporary signals. As part of this programme of works, Crown Road has recently been made into a two-way system and can be used as an alternative route. Cllr Ben Maney, Member for Highways and Transport, said: "Grays is an important town, which has a key role in the borough's economy, and this section of the road network is vital to the free-flow of traffic and improved access to and through the town centre. "Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to residents and businesses within the vicinity."
