A CONSULTATION has been launched offering local residents the chance of offer their opinion on a new footbridge over a rail line that links communites.

The footbridge that links Ardmore Road and Orchard Road in South Ockendon is currently deteriorating and safety experts say it needs to be replaced, as refurbishment will not solve its problems.

Consequently Thurrock Council is inviting comment on the options.

The authority has launched a consultation saying: "We are seeking views and comments on proposals for the Orchard Road footbridge replacement in South Ockendon. The existing bridge is no longer fit for purpose and needs replacing.

"The condition of the bridge has deteriorated. There are safety concerns including failed surfacing that could impact on future use and maintenance of the footbridge. Refurbishment is not feasible due to the proximity to the railway and the ongoing costs of maintaining the structure.

"Replacing the footbridge will improve accessibility for all users, especially those with reduced mobility."

The council says the new bridge will be designed to:

  • Minimise the impact on the existing surrounding environment
  • Minimise the carbon footprint
  • Improve the ramp access for all users
  • Include direct stepped access on both sides of the footbridge
  • Have shades of greens and browns

In addition it says new bridge will maintain the existing link and improve usability for residents and businesses in the area. It will also meet modern requirements for ramp gradients and clearance over the railway.

The council adds that the bridge will be closed during construction, saying: "Measures will be put in place to help mitigate the impact of this closure."

The consultation will run till 6 September. Residents do not have the oportunity to comment online, instead they are being invited to submit emails with their veiws to [email protected]
