A HORNDON on the Hill couple are among those nominated for a community recognition awards event.

Once again, as Christmas approaches, the Festival Leisure Park at Basildon cast its net across the whole South Essex region to learn more about the local heroes who are making a difference to their community.

And Peter and Jilly Rogers from Horndon on the Hill have made the short list in the Volunteer of the Year category for their efforts.

The couple were nominated "Because they walk around our village every morning and evening collecting rubbish and generally caring for the village.

"They arrange Christmas dinner for all the elderly villagers including raffle and entertainment all for free!

"They are always assisting the village including picking up the children at the dead end and bringing them safely up the village.

"We would be lost with out them always around to lend a helping hand."

You can read all about the various categories and other nominations via this Thurrock Nub News link.

Matthew Chambers, Centre Manager of Festival Leisure Park said "This year has proved community spirit and support for one another is stronger than ever, and we're delighted to once again be able to recognise both people and businesses within the local community who go that extra mile!

"Voting is now open through our website and we're looking forward to ultimately awarding those in the local community for going above and beyond."

Voting in the Radio Essex-sponsored awards closes on Friday, 18 December at noon.
