THANKS have been expressed by the trustees of one of Thurrock's hidden historical gems to volunteers from a local company who have helped give its grounds a big clean up.

Staff from east of England law firm Birketts LLP recently spent time at the Purfleet-on-Thames Heritage and Military Centre on Centurion Way and gave its Thames riverside grounds a 'going over'.

Bags of rubbish and weeds were collected and after the event trustee Paul Hounsell said: "A big thank you to our new friends from Birketts LLP who done a fantastic job of weeding around the centre.

"It was a job that needed doing and their offer of manpower under a community support day couldn't have come at a better time

"Thanks again from everyone at the centre."

The kindness came just days after a disappointment for the centre when vandals broke off one of its memorial silhouette tribute figurres and cast it into the Thames - though even that later brought out the best in community spirit as it was recovered from the river by more centre supporters and it is hoped it can be restored and reinstated.

The clean-up at the centre is timely as it will host a commemorative event next weekend: https://thurrock.nub.news/whats-on/community-events/commemoration-of-the-rev-john-newton-69878
