CONSTRUCTION work has started on a project that will redevelop three blocks of flats in Thurrock into modern, high-quality homes.

Work is underway at Teviot Avenue in Aveley to demolish three existing blocks of flats containing 36 council homes that were built in the 1950s, so that 48 new, affordable council homes can be built.

The redevelopment of numbers 158-228 (evens only) at Teviot Avenue was approved by the previous Conservative administration in March last year and work is set to be completed by Autumn 2027.

Mayor Cllr Sue Shinnick and Cllrs Cathy Sisterson and Srikanth Panjala are briefed.

To celebrate the start of development work, Borough Mayor Cllr Sue Shinnick, along with ward councillors, paid a visit to the site to discuss the ongoing work with council staff and building contractors, Marfleet & Bradshaw.

The council's deputy leader and cabinet member for good growth, Labour's Cllr Lee Watson, said: "Our residents deserve affordable high-quality homes, and by utilising this council-owned land that wasn't being used to its full potential, we can create 30 brand-new houses and 18 flats to help meet these needs."

Cabinet member for social housing Cllr Mark Hurrell added: "I am delighted that work is underway for this fantastic redevelopment project that will create a new generation of social housing that is fit for modern living.

"I am looking forward to keeping up-to-date with each stage of the areas transformation ahead of the project's completion in two year's time."

Ricky Lewis, a director of Marfleet & Bradshaw, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Thurrock Council on the Teviot Avenue redevelopment, delivering much-needed affordable homes to the borough with sustainability, energy efficiency and resident comfort designed in. We are committed to delivering the scheme to the highest standards and ensuring it leaves a positive legacy for Thurrock and its residents."
