Workers resolve sinking issue in Chadwell St Mary - things should be back to normal tomorrow
By Nub News Reporter 10th Jun 2026
THURROCK Council workers responded quickly to fix a sink hole that caused traffic disruption after appearing in the middle of a busy borough crossroads.
The hole opened up yesterday (Tuesday, 9 June) at the Cross keys junction in Chadwell St Mary.
This afternoon (Thursday, 10 June) the council announced its engineers had resolved the issue but warned the knock-on delay might carry on until tomorrow because of resurfacing and moving the traffic management system.
A statement said: "Our teams have now assessed the sinkhole at the traffic light junction by the Cross Keys Masonic Centre in Chadwell St Mary, and work is underway today to fully excavate the affected area and safely backfill it with concrete. Once this is complete, resurfacing will take place tomorrow.
"We are currently aiming to remove the traffic management measures tomorrow, but this will depend on the full extent of the excavation.
"Please continue to avoid the area where possible while works are underway."
