IN the build up to the annual Karis Angel Ball, which will take place at Orsett Hall this evening (Saturday, 16 October) the foundation set up in memory of the much-missed and loved youngster has been sharing the stories of some of the borough's young people who have been honoured for their positive contributions to the local community.

The foundation was created following the death of Karis, from Corringham, aged just 12 in 2011 after she contracted a bug called Streptococcus.

Since then her family and friends have worked tireless in her memory, setting up the charitable foundation and its work goes on, exemplified by tonight's fundraising black tie ball.

Among the ways it highlights the positive people in the local community, the foundation presents 'Above and Beyond' awards recognising the bravery of local youngsters in difficult circumstances and those who contribute to their local community.

Among recent recipients are 15 year-old old Mia Grieg. Mia had a bad case of Covid and was unable to get out of bed for three months, because of the severity of the illness, it effected her immune system and her body has been left very weak and she can now have an allergy reaction at any time with swelling and hives.

Mia is now under different different London Hospitals on many medications, but is slowly getting back to some normality and has been nominated for having the strength to carry on during a very difficult and trying time.

Also honoured have been 11-year old Chloe Hudspith who is combating an illness that sometimes requires the use of a wheelchair but she always has a smile and supports others rather than focusing on herself.

17 year-old Katie Davies has complex cardio issues and yet still finds time on top of her college stuidies to fundraise for local AED Devices and helps educate others regarding cardiac issues.

The foundation says: "Both girls are incredible role models and most definitely deserve to be recognised for our KMD 'Above and Beyond' certificate and voucher ."

Harley Biggs and Elle Pluck are youngsters who have made a commitment to cleaning and litter-picking in local parks, saying: "They are a lovely pair of kind, caring, young people who deserve recognition."
