East Thurrock took to their away strip to make a real fight of this afternoon's FA Cup tie at Boston.

EAST Thurrock United's hopes of an FA Cup upset ended with what eventually proved to be an emphatic defeat in Lincolnshire this afternoon and there was disappointment for two of the borough's other non-League sides.

The only ray of sunshine on a gloomy and damp afternoon came at Parkside where a 3-0 win ensured Grays Athletic stayed top of the Isthmian North.

Tilbury had two men sent off in their home Isthmian North clash with Dereham Town at Chadfields where the home side went down 3-1 and Aveley lost out in a best of seven goal thriller at Bury Town.

East Thurrock were hoping they might be able to spring a shock against National League south Boston United and for more than an hour at the impressive Jakemans Community Stadium the Rocks were in contention.

Rocks played a full part in the match played out in driving rain and created several chances, including a couple from Johnny Ashman, before Danny Elliott gave the hosts the advantage late in the first half with a 39th minute opener but Paul Martin's Rocks were still very much in the tie until a penalty from Elliott on 65 minutes put real daylight between the sides and Fraser Preston made it three for the Pilgrims just four minutes later.

Jake Wright's 86th minute goal made it 4-0 to send Rocks on their long journey home on the end of a scoreline that didn't reflect their efforts for much of the game.

Two goals inside two minutes put Grays on the way to their 3-0 victory over Felixstowe and Walton United.

Anointed Chukwu opened the scoring on 25 minutes and Joe Paxman followed up a minute later.

Dave Knight's 81st minute goal ensured there was no late drama.

There was plenty of that at Chadfields though, in a match of four goals, seven yellow cards and two red cards as Tilbury went down 3-1 to Dereham.

It had all started well for the Dockers with Phil Roberts giving them a 14th minute lead but the Deres got back into the match with an equaliser from Matthew Castellan just four minutes into the second half and it all went downhill from there on.

Charlie Kendall picked up his second yellow and a dismissal on 53 minutes and he was followed to the showers two minutes later by fellow defender Darren Phillips who got a straight red.

The remaining nine men did their best but numbers told and Dereham wrapped up the points with goals from Toby Hilliard on the hour and Adam Smith on 74 minutes.

Aveley were always chasing the game at Ram Meadow against Bury Town who opened their account through Cemal Ramadan on 22 minutes and Baris Altintop gave the home side a two goal first half advantage on 37 minutes. Millers came closest in the first half with Ryan Scott effort cleared off the line.

Alex Akrofi got one back for the Millers two minutes into the second half and when Harry Gibbs grabbed a leveller just before the hour Aveley were hopeful of getting something from the match.

But Bury were to establish another two goal lead through Ryan Horne on 65 minutes and Gerrard Buabo with 12 minutes to go and this time they didn't relinquish the advantage, despite Manny Ogunrinde's effort on 82 minutes which proved to be the final goal in a 4-3 encounter.
