Terry Lax - one of a kind who made a unique splash in Thurrock
TRIBUTES have been paid and many fond memories recalled following the death of a hugely popular former Thurrock character.
Terry 'Sid' Lax was originally from Yorkshire but moved to Thurrock where he became a member of Thurrock Rugby Club and played for the club for many years.
He was captain of the 1st XV when TRFC won the Essex Cup for the first time in 1975.
Club stalwart Diane Howells recalled Terry, saying: "He was a larger than life character who would belt out "On Ilkley Moor bah t'at" at the drop of a hat.

"He worked for a time as manager of Blackshots Swimming Pool. One of his first tasks was to drain the pool for cleaning. When it was refilled and before any chemicals were added, he managed to get three dolphins from somewhere and invited primary schools to send children for the show.
"He was a great guy and a well-liked member of TRFC."
Among those also paying tribute is Roger Scase, who said: "Another TRFC legend been and gone. Rest in peace Terry.
"As hooker to hooker, I will always remember the darker side of front row play he passed on to me. He was a great rugby player with his after match song being"On Llkla Moor Baht'At."
Mr Lax moved away from Thurrock with his wife, Karen, to Dumfries, Scotland, where he lived for many years and where his funeral will be. It will take place on Tuesday, 28 July at 2pm at Rougan Loch Crematorium, followed by tea at Sommerton House Hotel, Lockerbie, at 3.15pm.
