THE death has been announced of a South Essex footballing stalwart who played a key role in taking East Thurrock United on a roller-coaster ride up the non-League pyramid to the heady heights of the National League South and a famous FA Cup day.

Mick Stephens, 86, joined the Rocks as secretary in 2002, following the path of then manager Lee Patterson, who had both played a part in the rise and success of Concord Rangers.

For around 20 years Mick was the groundsman at East Thurrock's Rookery Hill stadium and was secretary for more than a decade.

Throughout that time, he was accompanied by his wife Margaret who became equally well known in local and regional football circles taking charge of hospitality at home matches and representing the club in boardrooms around the south - and occasionally north - of England.

In March 2018 the duo were honoured by the National League when they were acclaimed as volunteers of the month in the south division.

The National League citation said: "Mick has been part of the club since 2002 and now, at 76, still spends most days there looking after the pitch, carrying out all the routine maintenance jobs including electrical and plumbing repairs, carpentry and other jobs.

"Mick works tirelessly for nothing other than enjoyment. His wife, Margaret is instrumental too on match days with her hospitality, warmth of welcome and kindness to match officials and visitors.

"Mick's also a fundraiser, running the 50-50 competition and selling programmes on match days. Despite suffering a mild stroke, he checked in to make sure the club were OK whilst he was recovering and still attended matches."

Among the highlights of Mick's trophy-winning time at Rookery Hill, which began with winning the Isthmian North in 2010/11, were an FA Cup first round match against Football League Macclesfield, promotions from Division One North and the Premier Division of the Isthmian League and winning the Essex Senior Cup in 2019.

Mick stepped down from his duties as secretary around 2012 but remained groundsman and still spent time at the ground most days of the week keeping the pitch and surrounding areas in top condition despite the vagaries of the weather. He never shied from getting his hands dirty too, putting his back into many of the ground improvements carried out by the small team at East Thurrock.

Sadly, the club's fortunes waned following the death of club benefactor Benny Bennett and Mick, and long-time colleague, manager and friend John Coventry were among those who stepped aside as internal strife following Mr Bennett's death split the club.

However, says Mr Coventry, Mick's part in the club's success can never be understated nor will he be forgotten.

"Mick was a true character," said 'Covo'. "I doubt there was anyone associated with the club who didn't fall out with him at some point or other as he was always forthright in his opinions and Mick's way was 'always the right way', but those moments rarely lasted long and the abiding memory is of friendship, warmth and a great deal of laughter.

"We enjoyed many wonderful times together and consoled each other through some of the tougher ones.

"Mick truly was a legend in his lifetime and the condolences of my wife Christine and I, and I am sure all Rocks fans, go out to Marge."

Mr Stephens' death came on the day that East Thurrock Community FC, the phoenix club that arose following the liquidation of East Thurrock by its owners, will make a competitive return to Rookery Hill.

The new Rocks were formed three years ago and have won promotion to the Eastern Counties Division One South, step six in the football pyramid, and they will entertain Basildon Town tonight (Tuesday, 28 July).

Mick will be remembered by supporters before the kick-off and club chairman Jonathan Edwards, who graduated from young schoolboy fan to becoming a part of the club's backroom team, spoke warmly of a man he grew to know as a fellow Rocks fan over many years.

He said: "Everyone at East Thurrock Community Football Club is saddened to hear of the passing of Micky Stephens.

"Micky was a familiar face at Rookery Hill for many years and someone who gave so much to East Thurrock United behind the scenes. I always remember him alongside Covo, working tirelessly to keep the ground looking its best.

"Whether he was on the tractor or carrying out one of the countless jobs that needed doing, he took enormous pride in his work. For the facilities we had, the pitch was always in fantastic condition, and that was a reflection of Micky's dedication, hard work and love for the club.

"Supporters and players alike enjoyed the benefits of his efforts, often without realising just how much time and care went into preparing the surface. People like Micky are the heartbeat of football clubs.

"They rarely seek recognition, but their contribution is priceless and leaves a lasting legacy.

"Our thoughts are with Micky's family, friends and everyone connected with East Thurrock United who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Micky. Thank you for everything you did for East Thurrock United and for Rookery Hill. You will always be remembered."
