THE death has been announced of a woman described as the 'driving force' behind Thurrock's volunteer service.
Kristina Jackson, 54, the chief executive of Thurrock CVS (Community and Voluntary Services) died this morning (Monday, 22 August).
A statement from the CVS says: "Despite fighting a long battle with illness, Kristina continued to work with passion, positivity and bravery.
"Kristina Jackson became Chief Executive Officer in August 2011 and campaigned tirelessly for the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sectors as well as residents in Thurrock.
"Under Kristina's leadership, Thurrock CVS transformed, delivering many visionary initiatives across Thurrock including the supporting of thousands of people during the Covid lockdown to gain vital food and medicines."
A further statement from the board's directors added: "Kristina was the driving force behind Thurrock CVS and put everything including work, residents and staff before herself.
"Regularly working long hours, Kristina was committed to her work and the Thurrock community. She was a wonderful, generous person and a great friend to all that knew her. Her loss will be felt far and wide, she really was one of a kind.
"Our sympathy and thoughts are with Kristina's partner Simon and family."
Cllr John Kent, the Labour group leader who worked closely with Mrs Jackson for many years, told Nub News: "I am genuinely saddened by the news of Kristina's passing - she has borne her illness with immense fortitude and dignity for some years, working until very near to the end.
"Kristina was committed to the community of Thurrock and led the Thurrock Council for Voluntary Services for more than ten years.
"In that time she introduced many new initiatives and stabilised the organisation through a very difficult time. I feel privileged to have, both, worked with and for Kristina. My thoughts are with her family at this very sad time."
Borough Mayor, Cllr James Halden, said: "Our thoughts are with Kristina's family and friends at this sad time. She was well known as Chief Executive of Thurrock Community Volunteer Service. I knew her for many years as a hard-working, dedicated and passionate person - rarely did I ever have a conversation with her when she wasn't bursting with ideas and full of praise for those she worked with.
"She was much loved by many and her loss will be keenly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her over the years."
The offices of Thurrock CVS will remain closed today and tomorrow, but will reopen on Wednesday, 24 August).
