AS the countdown to the Orsett Show on Saturday, 5 September continues, Thurrock Nub News turns a spotlight on one of its traditional and most important elements – farming!

We visited the local farm of Show committee member Andrew Frood, who is maintaining his family's long-running connection with the event, something that goes back generations.

Andrew's passion is for cattle and he treats the Show as a special occasion when he gets to meet competitors, discuss issues and, above all else, take stock of the best cattle and livestock in the region.

He says: "I don't show cattle myself, we are a commercial operation, so it's a bit of a treat for me to go and see some of the animals that people have lavished time and commitment on. To see the very best is always a pleasure."

And Andrew says even those who know little about farming will enjoy the experience of getting up close and personal with the animals and the men and women who look after them.

Clarkson's Farm has raised huge awareness of the industry.

All the more so because of the growth and interest in farming brought about by TV personality and journalist Jeremy Clarkson's experiences of becoming a farmer himself in a hugely popular TV series.

"Jeremy has certainly raised awareness of farming and many of the issues we face. The Show is a great opportunity for people who are interested to come and speak to us and grow their, and their children's knowledge, of what we do," said Andrew.

Orsett Show celebrates the best of the farmyard with exciting livestock competitions! Breeders bring their prize-winning animals, including sheep and cattle, to compete across different categories.

Youngsters passionate about animals can also test their skills in a handling competition. Don't miss this chance to see a variety of these amazing creatures and cheer on the future generation of farmers.

Perhaps you will see a career opportunity for a young person in your family!

ASIDE FROM FARMING, THERE ARE MANY OTHER THINGS TO SEE AND DO AT THE SHOW. Check out all the attractions here.
