AN inquiry has been launched following the abandonment of last night's Essex Senior League clash at Saffron Walden, which was abandoned following incidents in the aftermath of a disallowed goal for visitors, title-chasing Tilbury.

The Dockers, who needed a win to seal the title, were 2-0 down midway through the second half when the referee called a halt amid confusing and confrontational scenes.

A statement from the Essex Senior League says: "No further comment will be made from us or the clubs whilst the authorities investigate."

On 70 minutes a confrontation broke out following a challenge between players close to the halfway line near the dug-outs.

It quickly escalated and some spectators in the stands became involved. Punches were seen to be thrown and at least one person suffered cuts to the face.

With no immediate likelihood of the incident dissipating, the referee took the decision to abandon the match.

Regardless of the outcome, Tilbury can still win the league with a win in their final match at home to Frenford on Saturday, though the title could come sooner if Romford fail to win at Athletic Newham tonight.
