TWO goals from Chris Harris maintained Millers' Isthmian Premier promotion push as the Parkside hosts bounced back from one Thames derby defeat on Saturday to win another just over 48 hours later.

The visitors, albeit still enmeshed in a relegation scrap, were in their best form of the campaign, and made the trip with four wins from six wins. It was set up for a tight encounter and so it proved.

With Welling setting up in rearguard formation, it was always going to be tough for Millers to break them down.

A locked shot on nine minutes from Matty Robinson and a strike into the side netting from Jesse Nwaebueze midway through the half were the only significant efforts from Aveley in the opening half.

However, they were to take the lead on 56 minutes when Chris Harris was in the right place to head home a corner for his tenth goal of the campaign.

Wings went more onto the front foot and were rewarded when they drew level ten minutes from time, former Miller Bradley Sach finishing from close range, and that looked to have dashed home hopes of a win.

However, Harris decided otherwise and in the 89th minute Harry Critchley linked up well with Jesse Nwabueze out wide, and when the cross was put into the box Harris rose highest to head home.

The win put Aveley fourth, 14 points behind leaders Folkestone Invicta with two games in hand and they are well placed to mount a significant promotion push in the second half of the season, starting on Saturday (24 January) when they host sixth-placed Cray Wanderers.
