By Nub News Reporter 23rd Aug 2025

ONE of Thurrock's sporting icons – who has helped, trained and supported thousands of young martial arts enthusiasts across many decades, has been reflecting on a historic memorable international trip and more than 30 years of leadership in his sport.

Mark Adams,  a 7th Dan master in his sport and trainer at Grays-based Yamaguchi Goju-Kai Karate-Do, recently took charge of the British team that competed at the eighth IKGA World Global Karate Championships in Japan.

It took place in the city of in Chiba, where Mark took part in his forst world chamoionship 33 years ago.

He told Thurrock Nub News: "Who would have thought that after 33 years, I'd be back at the very venue where I first competed in the inaugural IKGA World Championships in 1993?

"Back then, I was part of a squad of just eight. This time, I returned as Subicho of England, leading a squad of 40 determined competitors.

"Since those early days, I've had the privilege of attending every World Championships: Brazil (1997), Australia (2001), Holland (2005), South Africa (2009), India (2013), and Canada (2017). Sadly, COVID meant the 2021 event was cancelled — making this year's return even more special."

From August 8 to 10 in Chiba more than 1,500 competitors from 37 IKGA-affiliated countries gathered for the prestigious event.

Mark Adams of Yamaguchi Goju-Kai Karate-Do Grays.

Mark said: "The standard was incredibly high, with our squad giving everything they had in gruelling days that started at 8.30am and sometimes didn't finish until 11pm."

The hard work paid off — England came away with one gold (won by Mark Purcell), three silvers and six bronze medals, placing them ninth in the overall medal table, with several more athletes narrowly missing the podium in repêchage rounds.

Matt Rixon from Grays was a bronze winner in the Dojo.

Mark added: "A heartfelt thank you goes to our sponsors — Smart, Pro Carrier, and HJ Collections — and to our incredible fundraising committee, whose hard work made this journey possible. Thank you also to the coaches, supporters, and parents who stood behind our athletes every step of the way.

"It's been an unforgettable experience — one filled with camaraderie, pride, and memories to last a lifetime."
