Screaming windows force family from high rise flat

By Neil Speight 9th Feb 2020

A FAMILY living on the tenth floor of a tower block in Chadwell St Mary have spoken of the 'dreadful' living conditions they are having to endure and the fact they have had to flee their home today to escape the continues screeching noise from broken windows in the flat.

Pregnant Nikita Abbott Stacey, who live in the Thurrock Council flat at George Tilbury House in Chadwell St Mary with her partner Ryan and two-year-old daughter Demi posted a film and recording of the continues noise caused by high winds. She says: "Living here is just hell."

Nikita, who sufferes from PTSD says she feels she is being driven 'mad' by the constant noise, while Demmi woke up several times last night, having taken an age to get to sleep, screaming because of the noise.

Ryan, who suffers from mobility problems and says living in the high rise is entirely unsuitable for the family's needs, says: "We have been complaining about the flat in general and problems with it for a long time but the windows are a major concern.

"We first reported them more than six months ago but nothing was done but then when we kept asking they said the time had run out on the first complaint and we had to submit another. We have, but nothing's been done."

The family says they have been forced to get out of the flat today to escape the noise, but fear returning tonight if the wind doesn't die down.

Ryan believes part of the problem with the windows stems from a fire at the flats in June 2018. The major incidents saw the flats evacuated and significant damage was done to an adjacent flat.

However Ryan says there was damage to other properties, including his family's that was never put right.

"The council just don't seem to care, they just don't want to spend the money," he says.
