RESIDENTS are being invited to discover the people, places and stories that have shaped Thurrock following the launch of the council's new Civic Pride Heritage Trail.

The trail is part of Thurrock Council's showcase Civic Pride programme, which celebrates what makes the borough unique and encourages communities to take pride in the places where they live.

The heritage trail, which is the first in a planned series, takes visitors on a journey through Thurrock's rich and varied past, highlighting locations connected with famous historical figures including novelist Daniel Defoe, Dracula author Bram Stoker, naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace and Queen Elizabeth I.

The trail also explores the story of Thurrock itself, from its origins as the Saxon settlement of "Turroc" through to the modern borough we know today.

The new trail includes stops in Purfleet-on-Thames, Tilbury, West Tilbury, Horndon-on-the-Hill and Grays.

As part of the council's growing focus on heritage, Cllr Richard Bingley will also meet local heritage organisations and community groups at the Essex Fire Museum on 19 October to discuss ways of working together to celebrate and promote Thurrock's history.

Council leader Cllr Richard Bingley, said: "I am incredibly proud to call Thurrock my home. Our borough has a remarkable history, filled with stories, people and places that have helped shape not only Thurrock but the wider country.

"Heritage is a key part of our Civic Pride programme because understanding where we have come from helps us build a stronger sense of identity and belonging today.

"This new heritage trail is a fantastic way for residents and visitors to explore some of the fascinating stories that can be found right on our doorstep.

"My own interest in local history began at an early age. My father worked as a curator at Thameside Museum, and I grew up understanding the importance of preserving and sharing our local heritage. I am delighted that we are launching this first trail and look forward to seeing more people discovering the stories that make Thurrock such a special place."

The council is keen to hear from local people, community groups and history enthusiasts who can help uncover, share and preserve stories from across the borough.
