A MAJOR roadworks project being managed by Thurrock Council is reported to have burst its budget by more than £30 million pounds – and that figure is expected to rise says a whistleblower.

An informed source close to the council has told Thurrock NubNews that the A13 widening project has ballooned out of control – and as well as running massively over its predicted cost it could be up to two years before work is completed.

The project is scheduled to be finished by the autumn of next year but it is well behind schedule.

Thurrock NubNews was advised of the latest issues last week and we asked the council to confirm or deny the figures and potential delay brought to our attention by a project insider who says a lack of management, control and due diligence is to blame.

The council have remained relatively tight-lipped but they have confirmed costs and delivery schedules are being 'reviewed'.

They have declined to answer specific questions about the project but released the following statement: "As would be expected with any major infrastructure programme such as the improvements to the A13, the delivery schedule is constantly reviewed, particularly when complex engineering works are required such as replacement bridge structures and significant diversions of utility apparatus is involved.

"The project is reaching a number of key milestones which will provide further clarity on the overall programme and any potential cost implications. An update will be provided in the near future.

"With regards funding, the Council has secured significant funding from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP). The council shall continue to invest further in the A13 works while meeting its obligations to the scheme in this respect.

"This is part of £20 billion of planned investment in jobs, homes and infrastructure in Thurrock, including private sector led development at Thames Enterprise Park, Lakeside Basin and the Port of Tilbury."
