THE numbers have really added up on GCSE results day at Tilbury's Gateway Ccademy where staff have paid tribute to the achievements of the latest graduates from Year 11.

In particular, they have highlighted the school's success in maths.

For many years now, Gateway's maths faculty has been one of the highest performing nationally and the 2022 results have continued this trend.

Headteacher Grainne McLaughlin drew attention to the progress students have made in maths since joining the academy in Year 7 which she described as 'exceptional'.

In recent years, Gateway - part of the Gateway Learning Community Trust (GLC) - has shown its students can compete with the best in the UK across a broad range of subjects with maths, arts, history and modern foreign languages outstripping the UK's average.

In 2022 the top 10 students achieved 38 Grade 9 qualifications and more than 100 grades were 7+. The Gateway Grammar Stream, introduced when these pupils were in Year 7, has provided the necessary support and stimulus to ensure that more-able students achieve in-line with their potential.

Mrs McLaughlin added: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Year 11 from 2022 for everything they have achieved throughout their time with us. I am proud of each and every student and will be forever in awe at the resilience they showed following the pandemic."

The Gateway Learning Community CEO, Viki Reid said: "I am incredibly proud of our Year 11 students who have achieved a fantastic set of results despite challenging circumstances. This is testament to their hard work and determination, the commitment and skill of their brilliant teachers and the excellent leadership of Mrs McLaughlin and her team. I wish them every success for their future."
