Afternoon of celebration boosts St Luke's and remembers local heroes John and Steve

LAUGHTER and a few tears marked a wonderful community celebration in Corringham – where the lives of two much-loved borough men were celebrated.
The event at St John's Church in Corringham was organised and supported by members of the Oasis Women's group, who are based at their gym at East Thurrock Community Association's building on Corringham Road, Stanford-le-Hope – though for many years were based in the heart of Corringham on Grover Walk.
Natalie Cartlidge is a director of Oasis Women, which does a lot of work supporting local good causes and she looked back over event which raised more than £1,400 for St Luke's Hospice.
Natalie said: "This weekend, we held a very special afternoon tea in memory of two wonderful men,
"John Middleton and Steve Gould were best friends for 54 years, having met when they both moved into Gardner Avenue in Corringham — just across the road from each other.
"They both passed away last year, only months apart, leaving behind their wives, Janet and Chris.

"Both families have always been huge supporters of the work we do in the community, so we wanted to do something in their honour.
"Saturday's (31 May) event was a beautiful tribute — we welcomed more than 100 guests, raised more than £1,400 for St Luke's and spent the afternoon sharing stories, laughter, and memories.
"It was especially moving to have some of the St Luke's nurses there who cared for John in his final days, and to see so many of Steve and Chris's family — including Chris's daughter, daughter-in-law, and their friends — all come together to support the day.
"And of course, our wonderful Oasis Women were there with their friends and families. It never ceases to amaze me how much this little gym community comes together to support one another. I was genuinely proud to stand amongst them.

"The food was a real team effort and a reflection of the local love: over 100 handmade scones were beautifully created by Occasions Cake Studio, all the sausage rolls were freshly baked and donated by Greggs, and the rest of the delicious spread was lovingly prepared by our incredible fundraising committee — all free of charge.
"Every single raffle prize was donated by generous local businesses including Moonstone Massage, Cranberries, the Co-op in Corringham, and many more. Their kindness helped make the day even more special.
"I know there's often talk of negativity in our area, but this was a true reminder that in the face of tragedy, community spirit shines.
"John and Steve were more than just gym supporters — they were part of our extended Oasis family. I miss them personally, and it was an honour to do something in their memory."
St John's Church offered use of the hall for free, and Father David attended the event.
