Young people and adults from Thurrock with learning difficulties could get the opportunity to perform at big venues under a project soon to commence in the borough.

The Music Man Project (MMP) is a musical education programme started by David Stanley, who became the UK Government's Disability and Access Ambassador for Arts and Culture in 2021.

Organisations working within the Thameside Theatre , where a taster session will be held, and wider Thurrock have been collaborating with David and Vickki Jarmyn (Principal of JTD Arts) to deliver the project in Thurrock.

It will give students the opportunity to perform at some of the most famous venues in the country. Previous MMP performances were at The Royal Albert Hall and The London Palladium.

One of those supporting the project in Thurrock is Carolyn Djebbari from WearecreativesThurrock who told Nub News: "Last summer, while facilitating a workshop, I witnessed the benefits which come with people actively participating in the MMP. The high-energy performance of the visiting MMP originals was inspiring.

"I saw participants in these workshops come out of themselves, playing instruments and taking to the stage to sing, sign and dance. It was certainly uplifting and the smiles and laughter stood testament to this.

"The way in which the service is taught makes the route to becoming a performance artist accessible to everyone. With several instruments to learn, new songs, and a supportive environment to promote learning, development, and well-being, this is truly a wonderful opportunity."

A free taster session for the project will be held at the Thameside Theatre on Friday, 22 April from 9.30 to 11.30am. Afterwards the project will continue at the Community House on New Road, Grays.
