ORTU Hassenbrook Academy brought a nostalgic street party atmosphere to their school hall to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Pupils selected for recent good work and behaviour during the school year, as well as invited students from the cadets, student council and those doing the Duke of Edinburgh and Passport to Adventure programmes, enjoyed a spectacular street party during their lunch break.

They were treated to cakes and snacks in the school hall covered in red, white and blue for the occasion. Some of the partygoers even went as far as dressing themselves entirely in Union Jack clothes to celebrate the event!

Ann Harrison, librarian at Ortu Hassenbrook Academy, said that the street party was reminiscent of the ones she had as a child.

She said: "I like to see the students enjoying the street party like we had when we were young, it is very important for the children to realise it's part of our history."

In honour of the historic occasion, the school also planted a tree to celebrate the Queen's 70 years on the throne, which was planted by science technician, David Shirley, and Year 10 student, Isabelle Dawson. 

Headteacher Sally Feeney said: "In school, we learn about British values and what life is like in modern day Britain – It's important for students to learn that the Jubilee is part of our heritage.

 "It's important for the children to recognise the Queen has given her life to our country and to celebrate her and her service."
