Anger as rural trees are hacked down

POWER line workers have angered residents in Stanford-le-Hope by cutting down trees, including a large oak.

The trees were felled to create access to power lines between the Warren fishing lakes and Mucking.

The trees were around a narrow lane and had created a natural arch much loved by local walkers and people exercising their dogs.

Resident Nike Dobson has led the criticism on social media, saying: "Why have so many trees have been cut down in an area that is supposed to be a protected conservation area?

"It does seem slightly careless and heavy handed to cut down so many trees that have been there for so long. It has absolutely ruined the natural beauty of the area, not to mention the devastation it will have caused the wildlife.

"One of the trees was a beautiful oak tree which has been there for many, many years."

It is understood that the trees bordered the only access to power lines, one of which was in need of replacement.
