Banking on approval for new shops and flats - Plus other Thurrock Council planning applications

THE conversion of the former Barclays Bank at Socketts Heath in Grays has been detailed in two separate planning applications submitted to Thurrock Council's planning department – though the work on the property appears to have already been completed.

The bank closed several years ago and there has been much local speculation about what might become of the property. The answer appears to be flats and three news shops.

The proposal seeks to convert a portion of the existing premises from offices to residential use, creating three residential flats which will be a one person studio flat (rear of ground floor), a two person flat (rear of ground floor) with two bedrooms and a three person flat on the first floor. The application says there will be no changes to the external design of the site and all the proposed changes concern the internal space of the property only – however (as our photograph shows) that is not the case and the exterior of the building has changed and a new access created.

The second application related to the creation of three new shops on the parade at Socketts Heath.
