Barge races will be a historic sight on the Thames today
By Nub News Reporter 18th Jul 2026
SPECTATORS will get a great view of a link with history when the annual Thames Sailing Barge Match takes place on the river today (Saturday, 18 July).
Originating in 1863 through the initiative of Henry Dodd (1801-1881) Victorian London's "Golden Dustman", it is now the longest running, regularly organised, national racing event for traditional sail in the world.
It takes place annually on the lower River Thames, in association with the Port of London Authority, with the barges viewable from both sides of the river.
In Thurrock viewing places can be found at Coalhouse Fort or from the Thameside Nature Reserve at Mucking.
Details of the match and its history can be found via this link.
