THURROCK'S two MPS have paid tribute to Sir Graham Bright, the borough-born businessman and politician who died yesterday (Sunday, 21 January).

Sir Graham was twice unsuccessful in attempting to win the Thurrock seat currently occupied by Dame Jackie Doyle-Price but went on to have a lengthy career at the summit of political life in Westminster.

He was born in Horndon on the Hill, part of the East Thurrock constituency now served by Stephen Metcalfe. Today Dame Jackie and Mr Metcalfe paid their tributes to him.

Dame Jackie said: "I am very saddened to hear of Sir Graham's passing. His place in history is as Sir John Major's PPS during the turbulence of Parliament in the 1990s but here in Thurrock we have lost someone who gave years of public service.

"He recalled with fondness representing Grays as a councillor.

"Graham also had an impressive business career building his fortune producing 'Sweet n Low'.

"He credited his success to the education he received from Hassenbrook School and his time as chairman of governors was a real labour of love. Graham was also a keen supporter of the Horndon Feast and fair. A lovely man with an incessant supply of anecdotes. We will miss him. May he rest in peace."

Mr Metcalfe added: "Graham was a genuinely warm, kind and generous person whom it was my privilege to call my friend.

"His help and advice was always considered and was always appreciated.

"He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayerss are with Valerie and all the family."
