Cabinet's final gift? Another great takeaway sale...
By Nub News Reporter 12th Mar 2026
THURROCK Council's cabinet is planning what is likely to be one of their last decisions next week - selling off more of the borough's assets.
At the meeting on Wednesday, 18 March senior Labour councillors will be asked to sanction the sale of a number of plots of land.
They include:
• Land at 560 London Road, Grays
• 8 Linford Road, Chadwell St Mary
• Land adjacent to Tilbury Manor School, Tilbury
• Land at A13 Corringham and Land East of One Tree Hill
• Land at the Corner of Calcutta Road & St Chads Road, Tilbury
• Land at The Manorway, Stanford-le-Hope
• Land at the East Side of South Hill & Land at North Hill
• Land to the North of London Road, Purfleet
• Land at 88 Baker Street, Orsett
Money raised from the sales will be set against the council's huge debt, currently hovering around the £1 billion mark - caused largely by the catastrophic borrow to invest policy and subsequent borrowing to fund the interest on the original debt.
In the coming financial year the council anticipates another £70 million, just to stand still.
In a report to cabinet, properties up for sale are described 'a varied portfolio of non-operational land and non-operational property assets'.
One of the plots up for sale is the former housing office on Linford Road, Chadwell St Mary, which is currently let to Dominoes Pizza.
Other land for sale around the Manorway in Stanford and Corringham has previously been featured on Nub News as part of a wider sell-off of assets by the council.
Next week's meeting is likely to be the last of the civic year, which ends with all out elections on 7 May. The ruling Labour group is widely expected to lose control of the council with a significant upsurge in local support for Reform UK.
