Call to move Travellers on after they pitch up in Chadwell

By Neil Speight 3rd Jun 2020

A THURROCK councillor has called on the authority to act quickly to move on a group of Travellers who have camped by the side of a busy borough road junction.

The Travellers, with three caravans and a number of vans and vehicles pulled up on land adjacent to the roundabout linking Wood View, River View and the B174 Chadwell bypass at Chadwell St Mary around 6pm this evening (Tuesday, 2 June).

Almost immediately residents contacted local councillors and in turn Cllr Gerard Rice got in touch with council CEO Lyn Carpenter and council leader Rob Gledhill calling for action to move them on.

There have been a number of Traveller encroachments on public spaces across Thurrock in recent days.

Meanwhile residents in Aveley have expressed concern about why a group of Travellers have been allowed to remain for several days on land off Aveley by-pass. Despite the borough-wide injunction against encampments, residents say that this particular group of Travellers were not approached, despite both Thurrock Council and Essex Police being notified.
