ON Sunday (15 June) Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board relaunch their "It's Never Too Late" campaign in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse affecting older people, encouraging conversations and helping victims take the first steps toward seeking help from Compass, the domestic abuse helpline for Southend, Essex, and Thurrock.

Many older victims of domestic abuse feel it's too late to reach out for help or fear they won't be believed. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) acknowledges that domestic abuse is often underreported, particularly among older people.

Domestic Abuse isn't always physical. It can include a partner, ex-partner, or family member attempting to exert control. It may involve economic abuse, such as taking control of money, pensions, or property without consent; coercive control, like isolating someone and monitoring their movements, or emotional abuse, including constant criticism or threats.

There are many barriers that prevent older people from recognising and reporting domestic abuse. Feelings of embarrassment or shame are common, especially when the abuse has lasted for many years. Long-term abuse can decrease a person's confidence and their belief that change is possible. Generational attitudes also play a role—many older adults may have been raised to believe that domestic issues should remain private. In some cultures, speaking about family matters outside the home is considered taboo.

Social and physical isolation can further silence victims, particularly those with limited mobility or who live in rural areas, far from support services or trusted individuals.

Jane Gardner, Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner and SETDAB Chair said: "We must bring attention to the unique challenges faced by older adults. Our campaign, 'It's Never Too Late,' aims to start conversations about domestic abuse in later life. By starting these important conversations and providing accessible resources, we can support older victims across Essex in reclaiming their lives free from harm and fear. Together, we can make a significant difference and ensure that older people can live with the dignity and respect they deserve.

"Help is available—and it's never too late to reach out. No one deserves to live in fear or silence. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, support is out there from Compass. Trained professionals can offer confidential advice, and help you explore your options safely."

The campaign uses content and visuals adapted from the 'Hidden Harms' animation, co-created by domestic abuse survivors aged between 60 and 93-years-old from Dewis Choice. It explores different types of abuse such as emotional, physical, sexual, and economic abuse, along with coercive control and encourages victims to seek help.
