A STANFORD-le-Hope man has celebrated his 100th birthday – marked by one of the first congratulatory cards sent out by King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla.

Arsenal supporter Les Mayes from Southend Road was 100 on Saturday, 10 October, and as well as the royal message, received a personal letter from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and a signed card from the team.

Family and friends enjoyed a memorable party.

Les served in the Royal Navy on submarines during WWII and then in the Merchant Navy.

His daughter Linda Gibson said: "We are all so proud of dad, as are the many, many guests that celebrated with him at the Constitution Club in Stanford-le-Hope, where we had the most amazing and emotional time and would like to personally thank the lovely Charlie who worked so hard, and Vic for his support."
