Company apologises and says it made an error of judgement in way it treated disabled borough youngster
AN entertainment and leisure company has apologised for asking a young disabled girl and her family to leave an event it organised in Southend.
On Saturday, 14 September, 12-year-old Kennedy Mercer – who suffers severe physical disabilities – attended a 'Little Ravers' party at Popworld in southend.
Kennedy has restricted movement and used a specially adapted, bed-like chair. She has become a familiar sight at places like the Thameside Theatre in Grays, where she has appeared on stage in productions.
However, once Kennedy and her family arrived at Popworld and entered the venue, they were asked to leave.
Dad Paul Mercer told what happened, saying: "My beautiful princess Kennedy had a ticket to Little Ravers Christmas Party, which she had been looking forward to for a year as she loves both a rave and party.
"We arrived at Popworld, a franchise run by Stonegate Company. They let Kennedy in and all was OK, only for them to come up to us stating unless Kennedy can sit up she will have to leave.
"I had to take a breath before realising they were throwing out a little girl, who was already dancing and singing, out because she couldn't sit or stand!
"Remember Kennedy heard all this; cognitively she is not disabled, as they demanded she left because the presence of her and her wheelchair was regarded as an access problem. She was regarded as a threat to the public and other children! I think it was disgusting behaviour from the individuals involved.
"I am so upset with the organisation and people involved and they cannot be allowed to treat people this way. Vile, disgusting and small minded and I hope they can live with themselves! Shame on all involved, Popworld and Stonegate Group."
Thurrock Nub News contacted the Stonegate Group in the wake of the party and the company said they would investigate what happened.
A director of Stonegate, Peter Labie, has now come back with an apology and said the company is reviewing its policies.
A statement from Popworld at Southend says: "We're very sorry for the distress this situation has caused Kennedy and her family.
"We strive to be inclusive and events like Little Ravers are designed for all families to enjoy, so parents and carers can come with their children to have fun in an exciting new environment.
"We take accessibility very seriously and guest safety is our absolute priority.
"However, it's clear on this occasion we got this wrong and we are thoroughly reviewing our risk assessment measures, and team training, to make sure this doesn't happen again.
"We are in contact with Kennedy's parents and hope we can welcome her and her family back again soon."
