AS part of its hopes to build bridges with the local community after winning the right to build homes in South Ockendon via a planning appeal, overriding local objections to their scheme, housebuilders St Modwen Homes have created a climbing wall at a local primary school.

St Modwen's controversial plans for 92 new homes on the site of the former Ford plant off Arisdale Avenue, a development known as Bennett's Field.

St Modwen wanted 86 flats, two three bed homes and four two bed homes. Councillors wanted less flats and the somewhere near the 31 houses that were promised in the approved application.

The housebuilder got its way after a planning appeal and now appears to be on a charm offensive.

Representatives from St Modwen recently joined teachers and pupils at Benyon Primary School for a day of design and build activities, with children coming up with designs and models of their own homes.

Made from materials provided by St Modwen the children's designs were put to the 'three little pigs' test with a fan, to see if they could be blown down with a big 'huff and a puff'.

St Modwen Homes has also created a climbing wall by fixing stones to part of the school's new building - providing the children with a lasting reminder of their visit. Nicola Barrett, deputy headteacher at Benyon, said: "The children always enjoy visits that involve fun activities, especially when they're able to get creative. All children involved should be very proud of their efforts! "We are extremely grateful to St Modwen Homes for providing this exciting experience to our pupils, and of course the climbing wall that children will enjoy for years to come." Sophie Schofield, head of sales south east at St Modwen Homes, said: "We always enjoy engaging with members of our local communities and this partnership was no exception. Although this was a fun event, we feel the children benefitted from some insight into the importance of good building design."
