Convent students get hands-on taste of firefighting at Grays fire station

By Nub News Reporter   30th Nov 2025

YOUNG people in Thurrock and south Essex have been getting a closer look at the world of firefighting as Essex County Fire and Rescue Service's new Recruitment Hub programme continues its rollout.

This past week it was Grays Convent High School taking centre stage.

A group of students from the school spent a day at Grays Fire Station, becoming the latest young people to get a first-hand look at life in the fire service and explore the wide range of career paths the service offers.

The visit gave students an immersive, practical introduction to the realities of the role and the teamwork that underpins it.

Students from the school tried out fire hoses and learned how breathing apparatus works, explored fire engines and specialist rescue equipment, took part in group challenges designed to build confidence and communication, and spoke directly with firefighters about their role.

They also visited a specially created fire safety room linked to the Essex Fire Museum, which is run by service volunteers, where they explored common household hazards and learned practical steps to prevent fires – from avoiding overloaded plug sockets to making sure every floor has a working smoke alarm.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager Scott Ford, who is leading the countywide Recruitment Hub project, said: "The Recruitment Hubs are all about giving young people a real insight into who we are and what we do.

"It's not just about recruiting firefighters – it's about showing that the fire service is at the heart of our communities.

"We want young people to see the pride, teamwork and purpose that comes with the job, and to realise there are so many ways to make a diHerence here.

"The enthusiasm from the students at Grays was fantastic. They asked great questions, got involved in every activity, and got a real sense of excitement about what a future in the fire service could look like.

"That's exactly what we hoped to achieve."

The Grays event follows recent sessions at Basildon and Southend fire stations, with more Thurrock schools expected to take part as the Recruitment Hub programme continues to grow throughout 2025.
