Council expected to back Tilbury riverside pontoon extension

THURROCK Council officers have thrown their weight behind a project to extend the floating pier on the Thames at Tilbury, paving the way for a new river bus service connecting Tilbury to central London.

The proposed multi-million pound project funded by government money ringfenced to improve the Tilbury environment, includes a floating pontoon and a gangway linking the new structure to the existing Tilbury Landing Stage.

The development has been part of the Tilbury Town Fund vision to boost the town on the back of a £22.8 million grant from central government - though there has been local opposition to it - and concern that the government is simply handing cash over to a commercial venture - with little real benefit for 'ordinary' residents.

The new pontoon, measuring 40 metres by 10 metres, will provide additional berthing space, potentially for high-speed ferry services to London and downstream destinations.

Thurrock Council planning officers have recommended the proposal for approval, noting that while there may be a low level of less-than-substantial harm to designated heritage assets, this is outweighed by the transport and public benefits.

Council documents state that the new river bus service would offer a modern, efficient alternative for commuters and visitors, helping to reduce road congestion and promote greener travel options. The development is also predicted to support local regeneration efforts and improve connectivity between Tilbury and the wider Thames corridor.

A report to the planning committee, which will meet on Tuesday (14 October), says: "The proposal to extend the Tilbury Ferry Landing Stage will enhance sustainable river transport links to central London and bring public benefits through improved connectivity."

In May, the council approved plans to transform Tilbury pier and foreshore.

Perhaps, when building a high capacity cable tunnel and two massive road tunnels, a ferry will be needed to get workers across the estuary?
