THURROCK Council has joined more than 100 council landlords urging the government to back five key recommendations needed to renew England's council housing system.

Cabinet Member for Health and Well-being and Housing, Cllr Mark Hooper, attended an event in Westminster to lend Thurrock Council's support to the requests put to the government.

The final report 'Securing the future of Council Housing', which is backed by some of the largest council landlords in England, puts forward recommendations which they hope the government will now consider.

Cllr Hooper said: "Everyone should have access to a good quality home. We hope that the government will listen to the concerns of over 100 of England's council landlords to ensure that urgent action is taken to bring all social housing up to standard and deliver future generations of council homes.

"We need the government's help to ensure our residents and communities have high-quality, affordable homes. There are 4,955 applicants on our housing register waiting for social housing in the borough and these recommendations will help to ensure thousands more council homes can be delivered which the country urgently needs."
