RESIDENTS of Grays tower blocks have raised concerns after learning Thurrock Council is to romove locks on drying rooms in the buildings.

They were alerted to the change in letters from the council which say the authority is following a recommendation from the fire service.

The letter, which says the council is in 'continuous liaison' with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, says: "Thurrock Council regularly review the blocks top ensure they are as safe as possible for residents.

"Further to a recent inspection the fire service has made a recommendation to assist with the ventilation of lobby areas on each floor.

"The recommendation is to remove locks from the drying rooms to assist the fire crews in the event of a fire. This will ensure that the lobby areas can be quickly ventilated to reduce the build-up of smoke.

"As we begin to remove the locks on the drying rooms we would ask residents not to store or leave any personal items or waste bags in this area given they could present a potential fire hazard."

The change comes after the locks have been in place for the 50 years since the flats were built.

Residents have spoken up against the move, saying they are concerned about the security of their washing and that anti-social behaviour could be a problem if people who should not be there, gather in the drying areas.

And, in flats where mould and damp is already a significant problem, residents say they might have to dry washing in their flats rather then risk it being stolen, thereby adding to humidity and condensation in their homes.
