A SENIOR member of Thurrock Council has called on Highways England to do more after its blunders upset residents in her ward.

Cabinet member and Orsett councillor Sue Little has been on the case and slammed Highways England after learning they had written to local elderly people with incorrect information - saying they might be at risk of losing their homes.

Cllr Little says she has been assured by Highways England that they will make amends, saying she had received correspondence from the government agency which says: "'Many thanks for your email and for bringing it to our attention.

"A number of people we have written to this week received a letter which incorrectly informed them they were within the development boundary.

"This only affected a small number of people who had multiple Land Registry titles in areas where they may be eligible to claim for Part 1 compensation.

"The table within the letter correctly gave the status of their property as 'potential Part 1 claim', however, the wording of the letter mistakenly said that the property was within the development boundary.

"We have today written to all those people who were sent an incorrect letter to clarify this and apologise for any concern or confusion it may have caused."

Local resident Joanne Welland summed up local feelings by saying: "We received our letter of apology this morning it's just not good enough. They are causing such distress to us all."
