Firefighters were called to a glass recycling centre at the Port of Tilbury port last night (Tuesday) at 11.47pm and fought a blaze through the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Grays, Rayleigh and Orsett attended.

On arrival, firefighters reported that the building was heavily smoke logged. Crews used breathing apparatus to enter the building and used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire by 3.38am.

Watch Manager Dave Hogan said: "The building is a glass recycling centre so it's a big warehouse with lots of different sections inside and a conveyor belt going around.

"This made it very difficult to find where the fire was coming from. Crews did a a great job in locating it and worked really hard to stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

"As the machinery crushes glass it becomes very hot which is how we believe the fire may have started."

Last week crews tackled a fire at the port on a ship transporting scrap metal.
