UNSCRUPULOUS crooks are trying to take advantage of coronavirus fears and scam older or vulnerable people.

In the wake of a number of reported incidents in the region of doorstep callers and fake phone calls, Thurrock Council's Trading Standards team has issued a warning.

They say: "We have seen reports of doorstep callers claiming to be working for the NHS, stating that they are there to test residents for Covid-19.

"Scammers will undoubtedly take advantage of the current situation, whether it is to extort money, or to gain access to your home.

"Our advice is make those that you know, over 70 or in vulnerable groups - aware that while they are self-isolating or socially distancing to be alert to any unannounced callers offering these services.

"We are also aware of reports of scammers telephoning pretending to be from 'Southern Electric' offering £5000 credit 'to help people through the coronavirus crisis' if they can collect a £520 cash payment.

"The caller goes on to advise that they will visit the property of the resident to collect the payment, and then the credit will be added to their account.

"Be suspicious of unexpected calls, especially if you're asked to make an up-front payment or to give your bank account details. The safest thing to do is hang up.

"Avoid making a payment to a company or person that contacts you out of the blue, especially if you're asked to purchase a voucher, pay directly into a bank account, use a money transfer company, or to pay a courier.

"If you think you might have been scammed, stop sending money to the company and individuals involved straight away.

"If you have given them your bank account details, tell your bank immediately.

"Sadly we are all at our most vulnerable during these unprecedented times and sometimes it's then, that we can be susceptible to this kind of crime. Look out for your loved ones and neighbours."

The council adds that 'the right way' for people to contact trading standards is on the national Citizen's Advice Consumer service phone number – 0800 223 1133. That is also the number to use to request a call blocker.
