Drunk driver escapes jail, man harrassed woman and teenager breaches ban. Plus other cases in our courts round-up.

A MOLDOVAN man living at Strathmore, East Tilbury, narrowly avoided jail after admitting driving without a valid licence, failing to stop for police and driving over the permitted drink driving level.

He was sentenced to four weeks in jail, suspended for a year as magistrates took account of his lack of understanding of UK driving laws, strong personal mitigation and his previous good character.

He was ordered to pay costs and a surcharge totalling £227 and will have to carry out 60 hours unpaid community work.

He was also banned from driving for 36 months.

AN Aveley man admitted harassing a woman by text and telephone.

Ronnie Reiss Downey, 24, of Hall Avenue, changed a 'not guilty' plea to 'guilty' when he appeared before Basildon Magistrates' Court charged with the offence against Connie Meggs.

Other charges of criminal damage and assault were dismissed.

SARAH Jane Roberts, 47, of Maples, Stanford-le-Hope, admitted assaulting Terence Roberts and received a conditional discharge.

She was ordered to pay victim services £21 and costs of £100.

The couple have since become reconciled so no compensation order was made.

GRAYS teenager Mass Fye admitted two charges of breaching a community order by entering intu Lakeside regional shopping centre, from where he had been banned.

The 18-year-old of Schoolfield Way, Grays, was fined a total of £160, ordered to pay a surcharge of £32 and costs of £85.

IONUT Vasile Marin, 33, a Romanian living at Calcutta Road, Tilbury, admitted harassing Vasile Titu including uses of swearing on a number of occasions and also of assault.

He was ordered to carry out unpaid community work for 150 hours and is subject to a restraining order. He has to pay costs of £310 and a surcharge of £85.

A GRAYs man has successfully applied for a conviction to be set aside and a driving endorsement removed.

Samuel Adedeji, 23, of Wallace Road, Grays, was convicted of failing to give information about a car in which an offence was alleged to have been committed. He pleads not guilty and will face trial on Friday, 27 March.

DANIEL Ball, 28, appeared before Basildon Magistrates and pleaded guilt to two charges of speeding. The offences happened at Chipping Ongar and on the A13 near Aveley.

He was fined a total of £200 and ordered to pay costs and a surcharge totalling £120. And he received six points on his licence. Charges of failing to inform police about the driver of a vehicle he owned were withdrawn.

TAHAWNEE Adele Coote, 20, from Tilbury will appear at Basildon Magistrates' Court on Friday, 28 February for trial after pleading not guilty to assaulting Pauline Imms.

STEPHEN John Hole, 34, of St Chad's Road, Tilbury, admitted unlawfully taking a vehicle on to the road and hitting a crash barrier and also driving while disqualified and without insurance.

In addition to paying costs a surcharge totalling £195 and receiving a 40 month driving ban he was ordered to take a rehabilitation course to combat his alcohol dependency.

DAVE Lee-John Steingold, 45, of London Road, Grays, admitted issuing threats of violence to Veysel Meydan, demanding £500 or he would break a window at his workplace, actually damaging a window and other actions that were aggressive.

He will be sentenced on Monday, 3 February and in the meantime cannot enter the Istanbul Grill Restaurant on London Road, in Grays.

VASILE Popescu, 33, of Mill Lane, Grays, admitted drink driving and was fined £370 with costs and a surcharge totalling £142. He was disqualified from driving for two years.

TOMMY Paul Strutt, 34, of Crofton Road, Grays, admitted damaging the door of a vehicle belonging to Oj Aryan. He was fined £150 and ordered to pay compensation of £500 in addition to court costs and a surcharge totalling £135.

JOHN Bibby, 42, of Hollis Place, Grays, admitted assaulting Kelly Whitehair. He will be sentenced at Basildon Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 23 January.

JAY Richie Hursham, 22, of Anton Road, South Ockendon, admitted breaching a community order and was fined £100 and ordered to pay costs of £60.

CHRISTOPHER James Weskett, 44,. whose address was given as Unit 8 on the Star Industrial estate at Chadwell St Mary, admitted assaulting a police officer in the course of her duty and assaulting a woman, Tracy Crickmar. He also admitted damaging her property.

He will reappear before Basildon magistrates on Wednesday, 29 January, for sentencing.

A TILBURY man, Edward Jacobs, 53 from Southey walk, will face trial at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, 3 February after pleading not guilty to sexually assaulting a woman.
