Thurrock's Muslim community celebrated Eid ul-Fitr today, 10 April, with special Eid prayers.

Eid which means "festival or feast" marks the end of holy month of Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting and prayers for Muslims.

The Muslims began the fasting on 16 March which ended yesterday, 9 April. The fasting person is not allowed to eat or drink anything from dawn to sunset.

Special Eid prayers were held in Grays Park Mosque, Taleem Mosque, Tilbury Mosque, Stanford-le-Hope Mosque and NASFAT Grays Thurrock's rented hall as well as in Purfleet-on-Thames and South Ockendon. The prayers were attended by more than five thousand men, women and children including Thurrock Council leader, Cllr Andrew Jefferies, and Councillor Qaisar Abbas.

The Imams emphasised the importance of giving more and helping others. They also made special prayers for people suffering hunger and displacement and for those who are affected by conflicts such as Palestine, Sudan and other countries.
