THE doors to Thurrock's new hospice are now open and visitors are being welcomed to take a look at the new facility run by St Luke's Hospice.

In a green belt setting, the new hospice building on the Shires Estate, on Lower Dunton Road near Horndon on the Hill was completed as part of the adjacent housing development and will shortly offer palliative care through its in-atient unit.

The building currently offers face-to-face counselling sessions for adults, young people and children in purpose built counselling suites and opened treatment clinics, welcoming patients to integrated therapies, e.g. a Lymphoedema clinic. In-person training is also in progress in fully air-conditioned training rooms, offering vital support to Health and social care colleagues

Also now open, surrounded by peaceful meadows and gardens, is Luke's Sunflower Café, which offers breakfast, brunch and lunch, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 2pm. With indoor and outdoor seating, ample free car parking and bicycle racks for cyclists wanting a refreshment break whilst on the popular local routes. Take away is also available.

Run by a friendly team of hospice staff and volunteers, the income from Luke's Sunflower Café helps to continue the provision of vital end of life and palliative care services.

Hospice CEO Eileen Marshal, says: "We are delighted to be able to welcome old and new friends to Luke's Sunflower Café. It's a lovely location and such a valuable asset to support income generation at the Hospice. I would like to thank everyone who's helped in setting up the café and for all the volunteers who so kindly help us and provide a lovely, warm welcome.
