UPDATED: Fire at Coryton sends plume of smoke soaring. Crews from nine stations attended - one person was burned and required treatment at hospital

EMERGENCY services are dealing with a fire at a fuel storage depot at Coryton where a large plume of smoke spiralled above the site.

Fire appliances including Hazmat response services rushing to the scene - as did other emergency responders including the East of England Ambulance service.

A statement from Essex Fire and Rescue says: "Firefighters were called to an incident near the Manorway, Coryton at 6.04pm. 

"On arrival, crews confirmed that it was a fire in an oil refinery.

"Firefighters used a blanket of foam to isolate the fire and extinguished it by 7pm. 

"Crews will remain on site to make sure the scene is completely cool and safe. 

In total crews from nine stations across Essex attended the incident.

East of England Ambulance Service have confirmed at least one person was injured, saying: "Two ambulances and three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles were sent to The Manorway following reports of a fire at Coryton Advanced Fuels site.

"One patient with burns was transported to Basildon and Thurrock Hospital for further assessment and care."

A spokesperson from the Coryton Advanced Fuels said: "Earlier this evening a fire occurred in a contained area of our facility, which has since been extinguished by the emergency services. 

"Our top priority is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people. We pride ourselves on our safety record and adherence to strict industry safety standards.

"We are conducting a full and thorough investigation with immediate effect and the site is currently closed so that we can appraise and clean the area. We have no further details at this time."
