Fire engines in funeral tribute to much-loved family woman and firefighter Karen

THE funeral of a Thurrock woman who served for 25 years as a firefighter took place today (Friday, 4 July).
Karen Brownlie (nee Edwards), who passed away recently, served at Orsett fire station throughout her career and a funeral cortege including fire appliances - one of which carries her coffin - visited Orsett and Grays fire stations en-route to a funeral service in Pitsea.

Karen was loved and known by many, including her family who live locally. She recently married her partner John Brownlie in a service at Southend Hospital.
She passed away after a battle against cancer. Initally she was given just a few days to live after diagnosis, but she braved battled on for more than 70 days. "That alonse shows her spirit and bravery", said brother-in-law Gary Brownlie.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service chief offier Rick Hylton paid this tribute: "Firefighter Karen Brownlie was a remarkable woman – a colleague, a friend, a mentor and an inspiration to so many of us.
"Karen embodied everything a firefighter should be: dedicated, compassionate and determined. Even through her illness, she showed strength, grace and dignity.

"Karen carried herself with quiet authority and immense warmth. She stood for inclusion, championed what was right, and always brought people in.
"Her legacy lives on in every act of kindness she offered, and in every person she helped feel seen and valued. ECFRS will miss her deeply, but her story, her values and her kindness live on in us."
