A HORSE is recovering after firefighters were called to rescue it after the animal got stuck in a ditch in Tilbury.

On arrival, crews reported a horse was trapped in a ditch, with water up to his stomach.

Firefighters from Grays worked with specially trained animal rescue firefighters from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and a vet to safely rescue the horse.

Watch Manager Rick Jones said: "Crews from both fire services worked really well together to calm the horse down and keep him as comfortable as possible while we worked to safely rescue him.

"Working with animals can be really challenging when they're distressed, so it was great to have lots of people, including a vet, around to keep him calm. Thanks to everyone's efforts, we helped him back into his field."
