THE firm involved in the much-delayed and botched refurbishment of tower blocks in South Grays is promoting a venture in which it will support local community projects.

Axis was awarded the £9 million contract by Thurrock Council to replace cladding and install new windows at six tower blocks in south Grays and three more in Blackshots. The work was supposed to have been completed by this spring but was halted, after Axis had removed the old cladding, after it was discovered windows made for the project didn't fit.

In the interim residents have had to suffer cold, mould and damp - a fact highlighted by the borough's MP Jackie Doyle-Price in the past week.

Axis has also been widely criticised locally for its lack of response to residents' concerns and complaints.

Many residents have complained of a lack of support from the council and a failing to hold Axis to account. The council also blundered when it arranged to hold a residents support meeting recently, but officers failed to show for much of it! The officer responsible issued a red-faced apology to residents.

Now, however, the council is promoting Axis's community scheme.

Its residents engagement team, which runs a Facebook page, has highlighted the project which offers grants of up to £500 for worthy submissions.

The team says:

Are you thinking of starting a new community project? Axis is inviting bids for up to £500 from individuals, groups, and organisations to support community projects local to your area. Each project should meet one or more of the following objectives:

- Support employment and economic opportunities within the

community

- Promote community involvement and resident engagement

- Promote environmental sustainability

- Promote social progress and equality
