Flats plan for Calcutta Club site in Tilbury

By Neil Speight   21st Dec 2021

A FORMER social club which has been derelict for 15 years could be demolished and replaced by 36 new apartments under plans submitted to Thurrock Council's planning department.

The former Calcutta Club in Tilbury has become a major eyesore on Calcutta Road close to the heart of the town. In recent times a number of new apartment blocks have replaced other old buildings – and the site is adjacent to a new block of council homes currently under construction.

The new building would be four storeys high and contain six three bedroom apartments, 18 two bedroomed ones and 12 one bedroom homes.

Parking areas in an undercroft area at street level are proposed to be accessed from the rear or the sides of the building to prevent cars from congesting the main High Street. Parking would be provided based on one car per apartment.

The applicants say: "The existing community building (New Calcutta Club) on the proposed site has been derelict for over 15 years and the site is in desperate need of re-development. Planning enforcement have repeatedly requested the status of the site and its future."

The full application and the opportunity to comment can be found via this link.
