Force confirms sale of local police station but say service remains unaffected

THE former police station on Darenth Lane, South Ockendon, has been sold, almost ten years since it was closed to the public, Essex Police have confirmed.
For a number of years after its front doors were shut, the offices were used by officers, including a CID team, and beat officers.
Following their departure, the property was put on the market. In October last year, despite many objections by residents, Thurrock Council granted planning permission for the building to be turned into a gym.
District Commander for Thurrock, Chief Inspector Tony Atkin said: "Our local and Neighbourhood Policing Teams moved from South Ockendon to Grays Police Station in 2022. Thanks to their work, crime has also fallen by 15.8% in the latest year-on-year figures for South Ockendon.
"Our dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team, who patrol South Ockendon every day, also continue to tackle concerns that matter to you by working with partners, local business and support groups.
"They are working to make your town safer by catching drug dealers, shoplifters, those carrying weapons, as well as dealing with ASB.
"So, to reassure you, the sale of the police station will not change our policing presence in the community and beyond. We are committed to staying visible and accessible. If you see my officers out on the beat or at community events, please come and talk to us and tell us your concerns."

CI Atkin made a similar assurance when Tilbury's police station was sold off last year.

Corringham police station was sold several years ago - also prompting local concerns.
The front counter at Grays Police Station is now the borough's only point of direct fixed contact with police and is staffed by support staff from 9am to 5pm Monday to Sunday.
