A COUNCILLOR has called for the owners of Corringham's former police station to demolish the building and make the site safe after firefighters tackled a blaze there.

It happened yesterday (Wednesday, 6 July) evening when a fire broke out in garages to the rear of the former station.

Stanford East and Corringham Town councillor Shane Ralph has called for preventative measures to be taken by the site's owners, saying: "Action is needed to be taken by the owners or property developers to secure the site before we see bigger problems.

"The former police station backs onto flats and if the fire had spread to the main building and into the flats or the Karis May Darling centre it may have put lives or property at risk.

"The sooner the building is pulled down and redeveloped the better it will be for our area."
