A COMMUNITY group in Grays has been marking the end of the year by reflecting on their achievements.

The Orchards Forum in Grays set about smartening up their local area about two years ago after being frustrated by littering, fly-tipping and a lack of action to combat the problems.

Now they have won suppport from Thurrock Council who not too long ago were planning to use the open space as the venue for a new school.

A residents campaign and the ill-thought out nature of the plans put a stop to that and now residents have seized the momentum and have not only cleared up large swathes of land, they have planted 300 trees and bushes planted in Elm Park Open Space.

As the year nears its end forum spokesperson Boris Bramble said: "What a difference the Forum has made.

"We now have regular litter picks, dog walking groups, boot camps, fantastic groups of young people and a much used park, day and night."
